Melvin S. “Earl” Christy

Melvin S. Christy, son of the late Mervin D. Christy and Mabel White-Christy was born March 5, 1937 in Crisfield, Maryland. He departed this life on Monday, July 9, 2012 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland.

Melvin received his early education in the Somerset County Public School System. He was employed with Jessie Long Vault Company and Bennett Security Company at Dresser Industries.  In his early years when moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he and his wife Evelyn worked for private families.

“Mel”, “Jelly” and “Early Boy” as he was affectionately called loved sports and talking and conversing with his friends, especially Robert Bivens about who was doing what each season in sports, specifically Tiger Woods, and the Orioles.  He was “Pop-Pop” to all the children at the Princess Anne Town Houses when he was sitting in his favorite white chair outside. To the adults, he was “Mr. Earl” when on his neighborhood patrol of the community.

Melvin was a member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Princess Anne, Maryland under the care of the late Vaughn A. Johnson.

He leaves loving and fond memories with his wife of fifty years, Evelyn Tilghman -Christy; one daughter LaReine Christy –Kindle and one granddaughter, Kayla Ja’Tia Kindle whom he called his “knock head” and the “apple of his eye” both of Princess Anne, Maryland. One sister, Gladys (Mervin) Conners of Crisfield, Maryland; two brothers-in-law, J. Thomas Tilghman of Princess Anne, Maryland and Norman G. (Patricia) Tilghman of Salisbury, Maryland; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Lula Mae Christy, Elizabeth Handy, Ruth Lee Ball and Brenda Lee Cannon; and one brother, Mervin Christy, Jr.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Princess Anne, Maryland where friends may call one hour prior.  Friends may also call at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2012.  Interment will be held at John Wesley (Bowland Hill) Cemetery in Princess Anne, Maryland.

  5. God Father, not having being around you for such a period of time…you were already missed. Knowing that you’re not there anymore has made me sad. Remembering my childhood years when I was in the company of Dad and God Father, has really put a smile on my face. In saying that….God Father….You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten.

  6. God Father….Having been apart for such a period of time, you were already missed. Now that you’re gone, words can’t express my feelings. When I got the news of your passing, I thought of my childhood years and me being in the company of Dad and God Father. I smiled at those memories.
