Margaret Ellen Jones-Canterbury

photoMargaret Ellen Jones Canterbury, 89 of Crisfield, Maryland, was born on January 16, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Edward Clarence Jones, Sr. and Margaret Harris-Jones of Crisfield, Maryland. Margaret with her family by her side was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland.

She was educated in the Public Schools of Somerset County. She willingly left school at an early age to care for her ailing mother. She worked in the Seafood Industry until her retirement. In 1967 she married her life partner Lowell Canterbury. Margaret was a dedicated long term member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church.

“Ms. Margaret” as she was affectionately known loved to travel. She was a member of Four States, Eastern Stars and her beloved Light of Crisfield Temple #86. She traveled often to New Jersey to see her brother George.

Though a “Handful of Darling,” she was witty, sassy and fiercely independent. Margaret loved to cook, play cards and spend time with her friends especially Marian Brickhouse, Terri Jones and the late Ms. Elizabeth Savage. She was famous for her stewed chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, greens and deviled crabs.

She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Verna Jackson of Clinton, MD and Gwen (Gerald, Sr.) Reynolds of Elgin, SC; two sons, Booker (Karen) Jones of Salisbury, MD, and Welton (Vivian) Jones of Wilmington, DE; a daughter-in-law, Vanessa Jones of Crisfield, MD; her grandchildren, Tonya (J.R.) Alston of Clinton, MD, Keiko (Wale) Kosile of District Heights, MD, Teniah Reynolds and Gerald Reynolds, Jr. of Columbia, SC, Kiara Jones, Monica Brown, Eugenia Douglas, and Fredia Douglas of Crisfield, MD, Romenia (Keith) Hovington of Salisbury, MD, Theresa (Lem) Douglas-Abdullah and Lynetta Douglas, all of Princess Anne, MD; great grandchildren, Patrick Shanks and Karley Alston of Clinton, MD, Aaron “Big 20” Hutt of District Heights, MD, Zionna Reynolds of Columbia, SC, Jasmine Evans of Marion, MD, Destiny Matthews, SaMia Whidbee, SaVon Douglas, all of Crisfield, MD, Ashley Collins, Robin Banks, LaToya Moore, Aleeyah Smith, Alexa Douglas, Evan Neal and Eddie Neal, all of Princess Anne, MD; nine great-great grandchildren; a special nephew, Marion Milbourne of Marion, MD; three special nieces, Jill Jackson of Seneca, SC, Marguerett “Maggie” Jones-Hadden of Sicklerville, NJ, Williebel “Willie” Jones of Lindenwold, NJ, and Alfreda (Clyde) Reynolds of Tappahannock, VA and a host of great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Albert “Russ” Dix, Jr. and George E. Jones; nine siblings, Lela Jones-Rowe, Edward “Bill” Jones, Jr., George Jones, Charles Jones, Harriett “Hattie” Jones, Norris Jones, Edie Jones, Glenda Jones, and Vietta Collins.

Margaret Ellen Jones Canterbury was the true matriarch of her family. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her.

A funeral service will be held 11 AM, Saturday, June 7, 2014 at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Crisfield, MD, with a viewing one hour prior.  A viewing will also be held 6-8 PM, Friday, June 6, 2014 at the Church.  Interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery, in Crisfield.
