Bessie M. Stevenson, 82, of Princess Anne, departed this life Monday, October 9, 2017 at Salisbury Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Salisbury, Maryland. Born July 23, 1935 in Shelltown, MD, she was the daughter of the late James Rufus Mullen and Emma Jean Mackey-Mullen.
She received her education in the Somerset County Public Schools. In her early years she worked at Green Giant, Campbell Soup and retired from Perdue. She as a devoted mother of nine children.
Bessie was a longtime dedicated member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Princess Anne, MD. She was a member if the Heavenly Lights Choir and served as a Missionary. She has a passion for cooking and everyone who came in contact with her enjoyed it. She will be truly missed by all.
She leaves to cherish her memories with: three sons, Sherman, Jr. (Nekisha), Stanley and Thomas (Clara) Roberts; three daughters, Margaret Owens (Leroy, Sr.), Ella Polite (Henry) and Ida Roberts (David) ; twenty grandchildren, forty-six great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren; one brother, James Lee Mullen (Antoinette); one sister, Rebecca Gaulin; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Stevenson; two daughters, Bertha Christopher and Emma Mullen; two brothers, Cleveland Mullen and George Mackey; and five sisters, Hattie Scott, Minnie Palmer, Corraine Mullen, Angie Nora Tanner, Annie Collins and Loraine Jordan.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 30683 Hampden Avenue, Princess Anne, MD, with a viewing one hour prior. A viewing will also be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday, October 20, 2017 at the Church.
Interment will be at John Wesley (Bowland Hill) Cemetery in Princess Anne.
