Curtis Dean Whittington, affectionately known as “Curt Whitt,” was born on February 4, 1961 in Crisfield, Maryland to Aaron Peyton, Jr. and the late Mabel E. Whittington. After a sudden but brief illness, he departed this life on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia.
Curtis attended Crisfield High School where he was a star basketball player, leading the Crisfield Crabbers to two State Championship victories in 1978 and 1980. After earning his diploma, he briefly continued his education at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore before enlisting in the United States Army in 1981.
During his seven years in the Army, he served nearly two years in Germany, and received a number of recognitions including an Army Achievement Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, an Expert Hand Grenade Badge, and an H16 Rifle Marksmanship Badge, among others. Upon his tour of duty, he received an Honorable Discharge.
In 1988, the Crisfield native moved to Virginia where he was employed by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and later by the Walter Reed National Medical Center. During his most recent years, he worked as a custodian at Rising Hope United Methodist Mission Church in Alexandria, Virginia.
Curtis was a caring and giving person who had the disposition of a comedian. His most famous lines: “Let me hold something,” “Let me get a plate to walk with,” and “Shel, you crazy…you and Phyllis is crazy” will be forever remembered. And his witty character and “jive-talking” nature was with him until the very end.
Curtis is survived by his father, as well as five brothers, James “Eric” Whittington (Tanika), Terry Milbourne (Chiquita), Kevin “Buddy” Peyton, Rodney “Hook” Ward (Bertha), and Lamont Peyton; five sisters, Mashel Whittington, Janice Whittington, Phyllis Whittington, Sarah “Cookie” Wilkerson, and Tauhidad “Mimi” Thompson; a special niece, Matasha Whittington; James Milbourne who was like a father; a supportive, loving family at Rising Hope; and a host of other relatives and friends whose lives were enriched by his spirit.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Leon Whittington and Harriett Sterling-Whittington, as well as two brothers, Gregory F. Whittington and Aaron “Mike” Peyton III.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Saint Paul A.M.E. Church in Crisfield with a viewing one hour prior. A viewing will also be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday, March 30, 2018 at the church.
