Marcus Fontaine, Sr.

Marcus James Fontaine, Sr., a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend, died at Tidal Health hospital on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on November 19, 1937, in Princess Anne Maryland.Β  He was the son of the late Ethel Anne Florence Fontaine (Big MAMA) and Mark Hannah Bailey.

He was educated in the public schools of the Somerset County School System. Marcus was a hardworking man he worked in the beginning of his life as a supervisor in various factories, Nanticoke Seafood, Campbell Soup, Salisbury, Maryland and Green Giant, Fruitland, Maryland until he retired from Mountaire Farms in Princess Anne.

Marcus had a giving and caring spirit, and he was always the center of attention he would always lend a friend money or his tools, he loved playing cards and entertaining family and friends you could always count on a smart remark from him, and he always had to have the last word. He loved telling jokes and interesting stories that would make people laugh. Marcus will be deeply missed.

Marcus leaves precious memories with his wife of 59 years, Carrie Henrietta Fontaine, of Princess Anne; three children, Jeannine Fontaine, Gina Fontaine and Marcus Fontaine, Jr.(Crystal); one brother, Mark Hannah Wright, one sister, Jeanette Fontaine-Cottman, all of Princess Anne; nieces, Annette Maddox (Charles), Naomi Fontaine, Katrina Hayward, Trina Hayward and Thelma Douglas; nephews, Robert Cottman, Sr. (Barbara), Glenwood Hayward and John Gordy, Jr. (Blancia); grandchildren, Marques Griffin, Terrand, Jaleesa Purnell, Daryl Handy, Terre, Deshawn Carr, Adriana Cloud, Marcus Fontaine, III and Lashonda Ames; 12 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; special friends, Woodland James, George Jones, Levin Chandler, Oliver Hall, Harrison Hayman, Sherwood Ballard, Terrand Purnell, Sr. and Gregory “TC” Waters.

Marcus was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Anne Fontaine; his father, Mark Hannah Bailey; five uncles, Benjamin, John Henry Fontaine, James, Isaac and John Bailey;Β one sister, Elizabeth Fontaine; five aunts, Bessie Fontaine-Green, Malinda Washington, Henrietta Bailey, Susan Jones and Georgia Baker; two brothers-in-law, Glenwood Hayward, Sr. and Clarence Hayward; one sister-in-law, Maeola Turpin and one niece, Mordeen Cottman.

He will be truly missed by all.

A Funeral service will be held noon Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Anthony E Ward Jr. Funeral Home in Princess Anne, MD with a viewing one-hour prior. A public viewing will be held 2:00 PM-6:00 PM Friday, January 24, 2025, at the Funeral Home.

    1. Annette, He’s right there in Princess Anne. He left an impression on all that knew him. The Mayor of Somerset County, MD! He left good memories to a lot of people, anyone that knew him and children there!!
