Frances B. Hitch, 91, of Polks Road, departed this life Tuesday, July 16,2013 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Born May 8, 1922, in Allen, Maryland she was the daughter of the late Walter Scott Banks and Viola Edgar Polk Banks.
She received her formal education in the Public Schools of Wicomico County, graduating from the former Salisbury High School. Frances’ Christian training was received at Friendship United Methodist Church at an early age. She later married Lawrence Grafton Hitch and they resided on Polks Road. She moved her church member-ship from Friendship to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where she remained an active and faithful member until the merging of the charge. When she joined Mt. Zion she labored incessantly for the Lord. She served as the church treasurer for many years, she also accompanied the choir with her alto voice, ushered, belonged to the United Methodist Women and held the position of treasurer for the Busy Bees. She was most importantly a faithful worker in her Father’s vineyard. Her favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm.
To her family and friends, Frances possessed a loving and kind spirit. She loved life, the beauty of her life, her children, grandchildren and her family.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two grand-children she and Lawrence reared, Edward Hitch better known as “Porky” and Mannika Hitch Scurry; other survivors left to cherish her memory, two daughters, Barbara Jones (Journal), Thelma Long and her son, Thomas Hitch (Mary), eighteen other grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren, one sister, Viola Chandler of Philadelphia, Pa; cousins, extended family and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2013 at Mt. Zion Historical Church on Polks Road where friends may call one hour prior. Reverend Glendon Jones will be the Eulogist. Friends may also call 6-8 p.m. Sunday July 21, 2013 at Anthony E. Ward, Jr. Funeral Home in Princess Anne. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
