On Monday, July 27, 2015, life came to a close for James Alfred Maddox, Sr. God called him from labor to eternal rest. James the son of the late Arthur and Saddie Nicholas-Maddox was born on March 12, 1921, he was the youngest of five children.
He was educated in Somerset County Upper Hill, Maryland. He served in the United States Army from 1942 until 1946. He traveled to California, Germany and Africa. Upon his honorable discharge, he met and married Maria Johnson from this union, they were blessed with nine children.
James worked for Campbell Soup Company in Pocomoke, MD, He also worked at Dulany Foods in Fruitland, MD and was a waterman. His last job was with Harold Bozman Seafood Food.
Fond memories of James will remain with his devoted wife of 69 years, Marie C. Maddox; nine children, five sons, James Maddox, Jr. (Gloria) of Baltimore, Robert Maddox, Sr. of Delmar, Arthur Maddox of Upper Hill, Thomas (Karen) Maddox of Salisbury, and Russell (Kim) Maddox of Eden, MD; four daughters, Mable Collins (George) of Fairmount, Maggie Collins of Fairmount, Marie Corbin (Levi) of Oaksville, and Emma Dashields of Fairmount; 33 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mary (Alvie) Hutchinson of Baltimore and Annie Mae Milbourne of Salisbury; one cousin-in-law, Daisy Maddox of North Carolina; His best friend, George and another friend, Upshur Bacon Godson and his wife; Mr. and Mrs. James Milbourne, his son and grandson; caregivers Arthur Maddox and Andre Collins; another granddaughter whom he called Pitty Pat and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel and William Maddox; two sisters, Sara and Ester Maddox; one great granddaughter, Tiara; two daughters-in-law, Sharon and Deana; and two sons-in-law, Elwood, Sr. and William, Sr.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Saint James United Methodist Church in Westover with a viewing one hour prior. Pastor Elwood Collins will be the Eulogist. A viewing will also be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 3, 2015 at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron.
