Emily Margaret Taylor, born November 1, 1932 in Coinjock, N.C., departed this life on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, from complications of cancer. Emily, 83, was the third oldest of nine children born to the late Henry and Erma Ellington.
Educated in the Maryland school system, Emily was also a faithful member of St. Paul Episcopalian A.M.E. church, here in Crisfield. She was active in the church as a communion steward for many years, and attended faithfully for as long as she was physically able. She also served as the president of the Progressive Club with many lifelong friends. Emily absolutely loved doing crossword puzzles and reading – especially poetry – and was often asked to read literary and inspirational pieces both in church and at other programs.
Emily was blessed to marry her husband of 31 years, Cornelius (“June”) Taylor, of Marion, MD, who also preceded her in death. Their union afforded them the blessing of jointly raising six devoted children who loved, admired, and respected her beyond measure. Family was everything to her; a doting mother, caregiver, sister, and friend who would give her very last.
A long-time employee of 40-plus years of the Metompkin Bay Crab Co, it was here where she forged many lifetime friendships. Strong-willed and independent, Emily became a second- or “play mother” to a host of young ladies whom she inspired and encouraged to strive for their fullest potential. Emily exuded humbleness and humility, probably her most endearing qualities, which led others to gravitate to her for both advice and comfort; she listened without judging.
Now that the sun has set on this life richly lived, Emily leaves to cherish her memory: one sister, Frances Shelton (Roy) of Princess Anne, MD and one brother, Philip Ellington (Dorothy) of Hillcrest Heights, MD. Her loving children: Larry Bell (Bonnie) of Manassas, VA; Bruce Bell of Akron, OH; Ramona Evans (Wendell) of Crisfield; Dr. Michael Taylor (Jestine) of Atlanta, GA; Darlene Taylor of Crisfield; and Kevin Taylor, also of Crisfield. Also, eight grandchildren: Jason Bell, David Bell, Mark Bell, Marshand Whittington, Jodi Parsons, Jasmine Taylor, Jason Taylor, and Courtney Bell; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her parents, sisters, Doris White, Myrtle Johnson, and Jane Parker, as well as brothers, Alvin, Willie, and Randolph Ellington preceded Emily in death.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, December 26, 2015 at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Crisfield with a viewing two hours prior. Interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery in Crisfield.
