Catherine Lee Bishop

Catherine Lee Bishop, 67, daughter of the late Leroy and Irene Bishop, was born February 5, 1944 in Baltimore, MD. “Cookie”, as she was affectionately known by all, departed her earthly tabernacle on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland.

After a short stay in the Baltimore area, the Bishop family returned to the Eastern Shore and decided to make Marion Station, Maryland their permanent home.  Catherine attended Marion Elementary School in her younger years and completed her formal education at Carter G. Woodson High School in Crisfield in 1962.  Catherine received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in 1993, and in 2007 earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Warren National University.

Catherine was an employee at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for 30 years before retiring in April 2010.  During her time at UMES she worked as a secretary in the Student Affairs Directorate.  She also was an active and devoted member of her home church, Liberia United Methodist Church, in Marion Station.

Cookie may have been a small woman in stature, but managed to outdo her petite size with her infectious smile that she rarely did without.  She loved the Lord with all her heart and held tightly to His promise of everlasting life in Him.  This was apparent in the radiant and beautiful smile she exhibited daily, regardless of any hardships that she endured. Cookie reflected the light of Jesus in her life, and for those that she encountered they knew how much of a “mighty blessing” she truly was.

In addition to her parents, Catherine was preceded in death by her only sibling, a sister, Mary Ann McCready, whom she loved very dearly.

Those remaining to cherish fond memories of her: one brother-in law, Welton A. McCready, Sr.; two nephews, Welton (Gwendolynn) A. McCready, Jr. and and Marcus A. (Thea) McCready; six grandnieces and grandnephews, Welton A. McCready, III, Myeisha S. McCready, Mercedez Tellington, Frank Davis, III, Jennifer H. McCready and Gavin B. McCready; one great grandniece, Novell Evans; a devoted brother-like cousin, Joseph “Buddy” (Edith) Bishop; special friends from UMES, Mary Bell Harmon, Marie Billie, Gloria Bland Townsend, Roberta L. Bright, Patricia Sampson, Cecilia Wescott, Brenda Marshall and Sheena Turner; numerous cousins, a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Mt. Peer United Methodist Church in Marion Station, Maryland where friends may call one hour prior.  Interment will be held in Tindley’s Chapel Cemetery in Pocomoke, Maryland.

  1. My deepest sympathies to the Bishop and McCready families. Cookie was a special friend to my sister (Esther Wilkins) during her illness. She was a frequent visitor and I shall never forget her for that. May God bless and sustain you through these difficult times.

    1. Hello Carroll,
Just thinking about aunt Cook and saw your comment after all these years..God do we miss her, her smile, and wisdom.
She was more than an aunt to me and Mick (Welton)..puddin’ as she called him..she was like a 2nd mother to us. Especially to him after mom died (her sister Mary). But thank you for you support and prayers…it was hard but a day don’t go by she’s not thought of.
