Martha Ann Ward

Martha Ann Ward earned her heavenly wings on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.  Malt as she was affectionately called was born to the late Frances Veney and William Washington on October 30, 1950.  She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Thomas Henry Ward, Sr. on October 30, 1991.

Malt received her formal education in Somerset County Public Schools, graduating from Cater G. Woodson High School in 1968.  After graduation, she relocated to Wilmington, Delaware.  After a few years, Malt returned home to Crisfield and worked as a crab picker in the Seafood Industry for many years until her health declined.

Malt loved the Lord, and always offered encouragement of her faith to those she met along the way.  Malt joined and attended Living Hope Ministries Church of Marion, Maryland formerly of Crisfield, Maryland.  She was one of the original members upon the church’s founding in 2010.

Malt was a caring, loving, and supportive mother, grandmother, godmother, and friend.  She truly cherished and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  Her amazing love filled cooking brought folks from afar on occasions to taste of its goodness.  As she was known for her tasty “Crab Cakes”, “Chicken & Dumplings”, “Macaroni & Cheese”, and “Potato Salad”.

Malt was also a member of the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Inc.  She joined Light of Crisfield Temple, Daughter of Elks on July 18, 1984.  She was an active and faithful member until her untimely death.  In addition to her Temple, she was a member of the Tri-State Association (Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, Daughters of Elks).  She received her Past State President’s Honors in 1989 and her highest honor in Elkdom, Past Grand Daughter Rulers Honors in 1990.

Malt’s invigorating, witty spirit was truly a delight to all that came in contact with her.  In her spare time, she loved to play bingo, Pokeno, and solitaire.  She also loved watching the Baltimore Ravens, game shows and cooking shows on television.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Eric Maurice Veney.

She leaves to cherish fond memories her son, Brian (Shawanda) Veney of Salisbury, MD; five stepdaughters, Fayetta Corbin of Princess Anne, MD, Ernestine Corbin of Wilmington, DE, Sharon (Stephen) Stratton of Melfa, VA, Angenette Stewart of Crisfield, MD, Portia (Manwell) Cottman of Salisbury, MD;  three stepsons, Alfred (Caselenda) Corbin of Crisfield, MD, Wallace Ward of Salisbury, MD, Alfonzo Stewart of Princess Anne, MD;  one brother, Richard (Judith) Maddox of Eden, MD; seven grandchildren, Brandon (Charlisa) Harmon Sr., Ja’mar (Shelby) Hayward, Rodney Johnson II, Martel (Melissa), Travon, Shalea, and Nicholas Veney; five great grandchildren, Dimitri Smallwood, Brionna, Brandon Jr., Braydon, and Brycine Harmon; 24 step grandchildren; 36 step great grandchildren; three step great-great grandchildren; an adored daughter-in-law, Teina Veney, one sister-in-law, Marguerite Young; three godchildren, Gary and Larry (Erica) Johnson, Jaliyah Taylor; two special cousins, Nancy Palmer of Fort Washington, MD and Bernard (Catherine) Veney of New Castle, DE,  and a host of other cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held 12:00 PM Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Living Hope Ministries in Marion Station, Maryland with a viewing one-hour prior.  A viewing will also be held Friday, December 7, 2018 at  6:00 – 8:00 PM at the church.

Interment will be 1:00 PM Monday, December 10, 2018 at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, Maryland.
