Sidney N. Handy, Sr. of Upper Hill, Maryland was born on November 15, 1939. He departed this life on February 7, 2012 in Bryn Mawr Hopsital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Sidney received his education in the Somerset County Public School system. Sidney, also known as “Shug”, grew up in Upper Hill, Maryland. “Shug” left Upper Hill at an early age and moved to Philadelphia. He worked in private family (service) and later worked for Radnor Township in maintenance for seventeen years. “Shug” retired from Radnor Township in May, 2005.
“Shug” loved his family and friends in Upper Hill and Philadelphia. He was a member of the Horseman Club and the American Legion in Philadelphia.
He leaves to cherish his memories, three daughters Lisa Hammond (Ali), Betty Ann Handy and Carolyn Brewer (James) all of Salisbury, Maryland; the mother of his daughters, Anna Handy of Texas; six grandchildren, Natasha, Kevin, Alisia, Rijon, Michael and Lamont; ten great grandchildren; five sisters, Frances Tilghman and Bernice Pittman of Upper Hill, Edna Ritter of Princess Anne, Maryland, Cassie Johnson of Salisbury, Maryland and Reverend Kathleen Moore, who was raised by his parents, also of Upper Hill; one brother, Malcolm “Mack” Handy of Upper Hill; and one uncle Benjamin Jones, Sr. of Upper Hill. He also leaves a special friend Elaine Roberts of Philadelphia and best friends Horace Tate and Melineta of Philadelphia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Shug was preceded in death by his parents Sidney and Bessie Handy; his son Sidney N. “Britches” Handy, Jr. and three brothers.
A funeral service will be held 12 noon on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Upper Hill, Maryland where friends may call two hours prior. Friends may also call Friday, February 17, 2012 from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home in Princess Anne. Interment will be held Whittington Family Cemetery in Upper Hill.
