One Response to “Home”

  • Eric May:

    To the Family of Faneea Cottman – Often (too often) there are those quiet souls that are only truly missed when they are no longer present in your life. I have for the past several days reflected on Faneea and can provide only this in the hopes that you will understand the importance of this soul to me, the department and the University.

    Ms. Faneea Cottman was the glue that bound. She was friend to all, teacher to many, confidant to most, authoritarian when needed, a true rock upon which we all depended. As a new member of the department some 15 years past I remember her showing me the ropes. What to do, how to do, when to do, and most importantly what happens if you don’t. Always with a quite voice always firm. As the years went by I came to realize that she was a true gem of the University, a type of soul you do not often have the privilege of knowing, and I have been blessed by knowing Faneea.

    Throughout her illness she was always upbeat, smiling, never not performing her duties. This was very important to me as I shared with her my illness, also cancer, and we both agreed that this was the path that god gave us. Her strength became my strength, a gift that I will always treasure.

    It will be hard for all of us at the department to walk by her desk with her not there. But I will always remember her smile and warmth.

    I will not be at the funeral as it has been a long standing tradition in the family not to see a person as they are, but to be able to remember her as she was.

    As John Donne wrote:

    “Any man’s death diminishes me,
    Because I am involved in mankind,
    And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
    It tolls for thee.”

    My we all look to the heavens and pray to our lord and savior that the soul of Faneea Cottman will be received an be in the light of the lord for eternity.

    God Bless You and Yours

    Eric May
