Karen ” Lawan” Ames-Maddox, 61, of Salisbury, formerly of Crisfield, departed this life Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Coastal Hospice at the lake in Salisbury, Maryland. Born November 9, 1957, she was the daughter of the late George Ames and Lillian Chester.
“Lawan” is survived by: her devoted husband, Thomas H. Maddox; her stepdaughter, Shawna Morris (Randy); four brothers, Darrell and Kevin Stevenson and DeWayne, Sr. and Jason J. Ames; three sisters, Tonya Jennings (Larry), Linda Ames-Jackson and Dawn James; one very special aunt, Sylvia L. Ward (Howard, Sr.) and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held 12:00 PM Saturday, June 29, 2019 at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, 521 Mack Avenue, Salisbury, MD with a viewing one hour prior. A viewing will also be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday, June 28, 2019 at Anthony E. Ward, Jr. Funeral Home in Princess Anne.
Interment will be held 11:00 AM Monday, July 1, 2019 at Spring Hill Memory Garden in Hebron, MD.

I will miss my dear friend. May the Lord of all comfort be with her husband and loved ones.
Whenever Karen spoke of her family you could hear her love for you all in her voice; especially you Thomas. May the love of family and friends comfort you and may their prayers and supplications to God help you find peace of heart. Keeping all of you in prayer.
I was so sad to hear about her passing. It was a real shock! I still remember her always telling me that “If you like it, I love it, Ms. Cropper” Then, we would both laugh! I used to walk through the Cataloging at UMES deliberately just to chat with her. I remember one time that she got a new cellphone and asked me to help her out with it. We went through a lot together in the short sweet time we knew each other, working at the same jobs 3xs in a row as a matter of fact even. I remember that time we drove to Annapolis together and even though she was sick, she knew I wanted some company. I needed a reference letter once and she was right there for me, no questions asked. That was just the type of person she was. I remember when she got engaged to Tom, she told me that she had not been looking for him, but it had just happened. She was so happy! I could go on and on with the memories that we shared. I will miss her dearly.
I am still in shock and can’t believe you are gone. I miss you girl. To the family be encouraged and know that Karen loved all of you so much and especially the love of her life (Tom). The word of God says “Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5. I am praying for y’all.

Ms. Karen was always so nice to me when I worked at UMES. She was always so full of life and was willing to help anyone. I loved seeing her smile and making her laugh. She will be missed by everyone that knew her. Keeping her family and friends in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you!!!
