Norma Jean Burnette

The chain of the life was separated forever on Saturday, December 23, 2023 when Norma Jean Burnette affectionately called “Jeannie” departed this earth peacefully at her home.  Born July 24, 1947 in Fairmount, Maryland, sister Norma was the daughter to the late William Omar Burnette and Cassalena Washington-Bivens.

She was educated in the Somerset County School System.  She was employed with Lower Shore enterprises for 12 years.

She was a member of the Centennial Church in Fairmount.  Norma was recognized as a certified Lay Speaker under the Lay Speaking Ministry Academy of the Salisbury District under the United Methodist Church.

Norma, enjoyed singing, reading, listening to gospel music, and spreading the word of God.  One of her favorite past times was crocheting, spending time outdoors and being with her children.

She will leave behind memories with; six children, Michele DeShields of Spring, Texas, Jonelle Maddox (Kenneth) of Princess, Anne, Anissa Wallace (Kevin) of Eden, Maryland, Hanif Al-Azim (Sarah) of Spring, Texas; Michael DeShields (Sandy) of Spring, Texas and Faith Lewis of Salisbury, Maryland; 10 grandchildren, Justin Cadejuste, Sr., Ashley Wallace, Khalil Al-Azim, DaRonn Smith, Sr., Malikah Wallace, Amir Al-Azim, Joshua Maddox, Kevin Wallace, Jr., Tereke Lewis, Jr. and Kai Lewis; three great grandchildren, DaRonn Smith, Jr., Justin Cadejuste, Jr. and Lenise Maddox;  four sisters, Shirley Washington-Little (Albert) of Salisbury, Maryland, Diane Washington-White (Albert) of Princess Anne, Maryland, Barbara Washington-Smalling of Fort Washington, Maryland and Kimberly Young of Alpharetta, Georgia; one brother, Darnell Young (Darlene) of Baltimore, Maryland; many sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; a host of nephews, nieces cousins and friends.

Norma Jean Burnette was preceded in death by her late ex-husband, Frederick Franklyn DeShields; four brothers, William Washington, William Burnette, Harold Burnette and George Burnette; two sisters, Linda White and Francis Burnette Leonard.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 12, 2024 at Metropolitan United Methodist Church, 30522 Drive William P. Hytche Boulevard, Princess Anne, Maryland with a viewing one hour prior. A public viewing will also be held 2:00 PM-6:00 PM Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Anthony E. Ward, Jr. Funeral Home in Princess Anne.

Interment will be in at Centennial Cemetery in Fairmount, Maryland.

    There are no words that can compare to the feelings that you are going through at this time of your loss. However remember that your grandmother was a praying woman and she trusted the LORD with all of her heart. This is not a farewell this is merely an until we meet again celebration. As I would often here her telling Ashley “you will see me again if you live right heaven will belong to you too”! Continue to trust GOD and I love y’all .
