Catherine India Holland

Catherine India Holland, 65, of Marion Station, MD gained her heavenly wings on Friday, July 18, 2025 at her residence. She was born January 13, 1960 to the late Marlyn, Sr. and Bernice Holland.

Catherine was educated in the Somerset County School System. After graduating in 1978 from Crisfield High School, she worked at the Somerset County Health Department, in Westover, MD, in various roles and programs for over 10 years. She helped with their Summer Migrant Program and spearheaded a Breast Cancer Outreach Program to get much needed information to the extremely remote communities in our rural area. Catherine then worked at McCready Hospital in Crisfield, MD for 23 years as a healthcare receptionist before becoming the full-time caregiver for her parents. While working at McCready, she helped organize volunteers for the American Cancer Society to put together some of the first Relays for Life in Somerset County.

From an early age, Catherine and her siblings were taught to embrace His word and became very involved with church events. As their father was treasurer for Mt Peer Church, it was most natural for them to become junior ushers and to sing in the children’s choir. She loved her extended family and often looked after them more like younger siblings rather than just cousins or friends. Her faith never wavered and carried her through many adversities of life, especially during her battle with colon cancer. She gladly shared His word at McCready Hospital with coworkers, patients, and their family members.

Catherine had a gift for arts, crafts, and cooking, learning many recipes from watching her mother, grandmothers, and other elders down Branch. She made several outfits and costumes for her daughter along with baked goods for school events. Many of her drawings and paintings were inspired by the kindred gentle spirit of Bob Ross. To brighten someone else’s day, she would often share pictures or draw a flower on envelopes when sending out bills. During the holidays, she was almost always busy making cookies while crocheting hats and scarves to send to family and loved ones.

She leaves to cherish loving memories with her daughter, India Johnson (April); brother, Marlyn Holland, Jr. (Kathryn); one sister, Frances Holland-Windsor (Jeff); one nephew, Robert Holland; special cousins, Violet Lee and John Conway and many other relatives and caring friends.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Handy United Methodist Church, 5630 Tulls Corner Road, Marion Station, Maryland with a viewing one-hour prior. A public viewing will be held viewing will also be held 2:00-6:00 PM Friday, August 8, 2025, at Anthony E.  Ward, Jr.  Funeral Home in Princess Anne.

Today I am writing in celebration of the life of my beloved cousin: Catherine; who has been taken from us too soon. There were days that we would spend hours listening to records, especially the Jackson Five. She loved singing in our group called “ The Mount Peerettes.
Her spirit will forever live on in the memories we cherish, and the love we shared. Growing up with Catherine was an adventure, filled with lots of love and laughter. She will sorely missed.

My baby Sis India my heart hurts for you and the family you have been through so many struggles this year but one thing God is faithful and he will give us strength to endure in the darkest of times. Your mom was the sweetest and she loved to bake and I remembering her when she made me my first homemade Rum cake and the she made my wedding cake.
