Evelyn Johnson, 74, of Marion Station MD transitioned to her heavenly home on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Tidal Health McCready in Crisfield, MD. “Wommie” as she was affectionately called was the daughter of the late Charles Miles and the late Iris Miles, was born on September 6, 1949.
Evelyn graduated from Carter G. Woodson in 1968. She furthered her education at Maryland State College, (University of Maryland Eastern Shore), where she majored in Education. Her first teaching assignment was in the Somerset County Public Schools system.
In later years she moved to Boston, Massachusetts where she worked as an insurance claims adjuster; however, her love for education led her back to teaching and she resumed that career in a Boston Alternative School Program.
After several years in Boston; she returned to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and shortly thereafter she made New Castle, Delaware her home for twenty years. While in New Castle, Evelyn became a member of Mt. Joy United Methodist Church under the leadership of Pastor Derrick Porter. As a member of Mt. Joy she served on many committees: PPR, Breakfast Ministry, Sunday School Teacher and a member of the church choir.
Evelyn retired with her daughter and grandson in East New Market and came back to John Wesley serving on several committees; PPR, Administrative Board, United Methodist Women, Usher Board and was an active participant in Vacation Bible School. She was also a member of the Marionette Social Club.
Evelyn was an avid sports fan, and the Dallas Cowboys was her favorite team. In her earlier years, she loved playing softball and was tops at 3rd base. Wommie loved cooking, entertaining and feeding family and friends. Through the years her home became the gathering place for dinners and barbeques. She was known in the family for speaking her mind, her quick wit, smile and laughter; often enjoying friendly games of pinochle, spades, and bid whist; she could play with the best of them.
Evelyn leaves to cherish memories with: one daughter, Theresa Y. Miles, of East New Market, MD; one son, Frederick D. Grant, Jr. of Mapleton, GA; one brother, William (Dump) Miles of Princess Anne, MD; one sister, Bertha L. Cottingham of Hanover, MD; seven grandchildren, Tyler L. Coble, Zyaare C. Evelyn was preceded in death by her son, Charles Anthony Evans; four brothers, Charles Miles, Larry Miles, Samuel Archie and David Young.

To the Family please 🙏 except my sincere condolences. I was down to Marion Station for a funeral on August 5th 2023 n I came a little early so I so I could visit the center before a friend’s funeral. I did not know Evelyn was there but as I was walking through the lobby i heard somone say something and as I turned there she was Wommie as I called her and most people did. I turned and walked over to her and she was all smiles and we were glad to see each other she looked wonderful and nothing seemed to be troubling her. I am so thankful 🙏 I took the time to visit the center n got to see her. We never know when it is the last time to see a friend or loved one. So please take time to visit someone or say some kind words it could be the last time we have that chance. I have know Wommie n her family for over 55 years l, played many games of dominoes at their family home. I will truly miss her she was a wonderful person. 😢 i will remember her charm and loving personality. May GOD take her in his loving arms. Samuel T. Bowyer

My heart goes out to you all. So sorry to hear of your loss. You have my deepest sympathy.
To Theresa (Tiny), Freddie, siblings and grandchildren,
I am unable to be with you for services but want you to know that my heart hurts because my friend has left us too soon. She has left me with rich memories of her smiling face, kindness, wisdom, boundless energy, and years of a special friendship. For the moment I am sadden. As I reflect on these memories, I feel at ease and know they are healing my heart. Some of those memories have brought on a smile and outright laughter! The same will happen for you. Evelyn loved you all so much and would never want to hurt you. God summoned her and she had to leave. She would not want her departure to sadden you. I pray that your memories of her eases the heartache you feel. Our God will comfort you and bring you peace. She will always be with you, in your heart.
With love, Cathie Barnes
