Stephen “Otha” Shreeves

Stephen “Otha” Shreeves, son of the late Samuel and Evelena Shreeves, was born in Westover, Maryland pm August 23, 1928.  At the age of 88, following a brief illness, he went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at his residence with his wife at his side.

“Otha” as he was affectionately called, was united in hily matrimony to Emma Doane Shreeves on August 26, 1950.  The recently celebrated 66 years of marriage.

Otha will always be remembered by family, friends and acquaintances for his jovial personality, practical jokes and infectious smile. He greatly loved his family and the frequent family gatherings.

Otha was the youngest of nine siblings.  He was preceded in death by; Mayola Fontaine, Samuel Shreeves, Jr., Leroy Shreeves, Mary Shreeves, William Shreeves, Charles Shreeves, Ethel Shreeves and Russell Shreeves.

Otha obtained his early education in the Somerset County Public School System.  He was employed with the Pennsylvania Railroad and Charles Richardson Exxon,  Otha went on to become a successful entrepreneur in the agricultural industry.  Among many accomplishments, he was recognized by the Somerset County Soybean Board as the highest average double crop yield and best double crop manager.

He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Cottage Grove, Maryland.  Otha was an active member of the Trustee Board and sang on the Men’s Choir.  He took great pride in maintaining the church building, grounds and cemetery.  His favorite hymns included “Near The Cross: and “Just A Closer Walk With Thee.”

Otha leaves to cherish his memories a host of family, church family, neighbors, friends and other loved ones.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, September 11, 2016 at John Wesley United Methodist Church (Cottage Grove) in Westover, with a viewing one hour prior.  A viewing will also be held 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday at Anthony E. Ward, Jr. Funeral Home in Princess Anne.  Interment will be in the Church Cemetery.

  1. The death of a loved one is hard to bear. Please take comfort in knowing that your heavenly father understands your pain as he too experienced the death of his only son, Jesus Christ.
