Emma Mae James

Emma Mae James was born on May 7, 1926 to the late Thomas and Mazie Curtis Johnson.  She made her heavenly transition on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at Aurora Senior Living of Manokin in Princess Anne, MD.

As a child, Emma was a very nurturing person, she loved caring for her grandmother Martha Curtis and others who were in need.  She loved babysitting even before daycares were thought of.

In 1941 at the age of 15, she was converted and accepted the Lord as her personal savior at Mt. Hope AME Zion Church.  She was married to the late Samuel “Pipsie” James, Sr.  From this union, seven children were born.

Emma was a lifelong resident of Princess Anne.  “Aunt Bumpy”, as she was affectionately known, loved the Lord.  She was a mother to many and was very devoted to her family and her church. She never met a stranger and her home was open to anyone who was in need.  To know her, was to love her.  She was a Godly woman.  She was educated in Somerset County and worked as a domestic housekeeper.  In the last few years of life, she became well known on Social Media (Facebook) and those who never met her fell in love with her famous videos.

As she made her transition, some of her last words were “Whew, I’m On My Way to Heaven!”  For This We Give God All Glory, Honor and Praise.  Mom Would Want Everyone to Know, If You Live Right, You Will Live Again!

She leaves to cherish fond memories with her children:  Sandra Horsey, Mary Jones (George), Samuel James, Jr., Dale James, Sr. (Cheryl), Maurice James, Sr., Patricia James-Cope, and Gail Sykes (Andre); a host of grand, great grand and great-great grandchildren; one sister, Margie Dickerson (Fenwick); three sisters-in-law, Eleanor Johnson, Crystal Morris (Warren, Sr.), and Mildred James; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends; three special sons, Milton Maddox, Kevin Holmes and Tony Horsey; two Godchildren, Johnny Miller, Jr and Kevin Taylor; two special nieces, who provided care for her, Linda Taylor and Valentina Downing and two special nephews, Toussaint James, Jr. and Gregory Handy will also cherish her memory.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son; four brothers; an infant brother, Hilton Johnson, George Johnson & Thomas Johnson; three sisters, Ruth and Mary Johnson and Elsie Taylor and one son-in-law, Andrew Horsey, Sr.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, January 14, 2017 at St. James United Methodist Church in Westover, with a viewing one hour prior.  A viewing will also be held 6-8 PM Friday at Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion Church in Princess Anne.  Interment will be in Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery in Princess Anne.
