Hilda James

God’s finger of love touched her –  – and she slept.  At last, she became silent and making an end here –  – went to rest. Hilda Elizabeth James, affectionately known as “Ma-Ma”, 94, departed this earthly life Friday, January 6, 2017 at Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury, Maryland. Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Cousin, Aunt and more was born  January 25, 1922 in Kingston, Maryland to the late Martin Van Wilson and Mary Hayman-Wilson.

Mother worked at Delany for many years.  Hilda was a crab picker, oyster shucker and drove children with intellectual and developmental disabilities to school for many years.  Hilda was also a domestic engineer and friend to Marie and Omar Carey until they retired to Florida.  Mother was a member of the both the American Legion, Post #194 and the Elks in Princess Anne.

Hilda is survived by three children, Betty Johnson-Taylor (Milton) of Randallstown, MD, Kay Frances Anderson and Robert Keith “Sugie” Anderson, both of Princess Anne; three granddaughters, whom she raised as her daughters, Katrina Anderson, Gaye Ann Turpin-Dixon (Fletcher) and Janell Anderson-Bishop (Ambrose); one sister, Emma Jane Crippen; 23 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 45 great great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Thomas James; three daughters, Peggy Ann Turpin, Bonnie Lea Anderson and Margaret Jane Anderson-Collins; two grandchildren, Cheryl Johnson and Vernon Johnson; three great grandchildren, Jacob Story, Phillip M. Johnson and Martin L. Johnson, Jr. (lovingly called Budda and Gizmo); four sisters, Virginia Wilson-Cottman, Eunice Whittington, Sarah Jane Sheppard and Madalene Wilson; one brother, Elmer Wilson and one niece, whom was like a daughter, Pauline Cropper.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Princess Anne, with a viewing two hours prior.

Interment will be at John Wesley (Bowland Hill) Cemetery in Princess Anne.

  1. The death of a loved one is hard to bear. Please take comfort in knowing that your heavenly father understands your pain as he too experienced the death of his only son, Jesus Christ.
