Dorothy L. Wright

Dorothy Wright

A lifelong warrior of God, Dorothy Lavania Wright was called from the battlefield to her eternal reward on Saturday, February 18, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.  Born December 1, 1934 in Princess Anne, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Matthew Sr. and Mary “Emma” Leatherbury.

She was formally educated in the Somerset County Schools, graduating in 1954 from Somerset High. She received a certificate from The Supreme Council of the House of Jacob Bible School in 2014 and later became a licensed ordained minister, attaining the credential of “Elderess”.

She met her would be husband, Walter Wright, Sr. at the young age of 7 years old.  They would later marry on September 5, 1954.  They were blessed with seven children.

Dorothy has always loved the Lord.  When faced with adversity, her motto was always the same “The Lord will provide”.   No one was more steadfast than her; whether it was her love for God, her family or her dogs Troy and Dolly.

She has always been a compassionate person; always willing to help someone in need, whether spiritually or materially.  Many days she could be found at nursing homes.  There she would feed the sick and read the Bible to the residents.  She always tried to live by “love everyone”.  She raised her children not to hate anyone, “You dislike their ways”.

She held many jobs in her lifetime including being an assistant teacher and sitting with the elderly.  Her favorite job was anything that involved the church.  She was known for making chicken and dumplings, rolls, and sweet potato biscuits.  Those dumplings will be greatly missed!!    Once retired, she led a full life.  She took classes at college, traveled, gardened, sewed, cooked and did arts and crafts.   She was known to enjoy good gospel music, her favorite group was “The Sensational Nightingales”, collecting recipes, and spending time with her family; in particular, her grandchildren.

Her health would fail, but never her faith.  One of her favorite songs was “How Great God Is”.  She knew that all she had to do was: “Take her burdens to the Lord and leave them there”.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Walter A. Wright, Sr.

She is survived by one son, Walter A. Wright Jr. of Washington, D.C.; six daughters, Rebekah Polk (Elmer) of Princess Anne, MD, Angelena Wright-Wright  (Franklin) of Princess Anne, Regina Meyer (Ed) of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Almettrus Wright-Moore (Gentry) of Princess Anne, Judith Birckhead (Everett Sr.) of Baltimore, MD and Darlene Wright  of Princess Anne; one step sister, Ms. Connie Wright of North Carolina; three special godsons, Mr. Brice Shockley (nephew), Corporal Jasper Handy and Presiding Elder, Walter Sherman Holmes; she was blessed with 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; she leaves behind three sisters; three brothers and two special friends, Anna May Rogers and Betty Robinson; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and close friends.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, February 25, 2017 at The Supreme Council of House of Jacob, Inc., 13153 Lorretto Road, Princess Anne with a viewing one hour prior.  A viewing will also be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday at Anthony E. Ward, Jr. Funeral Home in Princess Anne.   Interment will be in Israel Memorial Cemetery in Princess Anne.
