Louise H. Burgess

Louise H. Burgess, 99, of Marion Station, Maryland formerly of Lake City, South Carolina went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at her residence. She was born on March 4, 1921 in Lake City, SC to the late Enoch Hannah, Sr. and Clara Hannah. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Burgess; her brother, Enoch Hannah, Jr.; her son, Billy Burgess; three sisters, Mary Singletary, Lucille Cooper and Lorraine Burgess; and one great-granddaughter, Tamara Morton.

She received her education in the Williamsburg County School System in South Carolina.  Louise obtained her hard work ethics at a young age.  She grew up working in the fields picking cotton, potatoes, etc.  She instilled that same discipline in her children and grandchildren. Over the years, Louise worked with numerous families as a Housekeeper and Caregiver. She also worked at the Shenanigan Irish Pub in Ocean City, MD as the Housekeeping Manager for many years.

Some of her favorite pastimes included: cooking, watching CNN, TBN and planting various flowers. Her favorite dessert to many people in Marion and beyond were her “Sweet Potato Pies”.  After she retired, she spent her days enjoying time with family and friends.  Louise loved people and was always happy when someone stopped by to see her. She was known for her kind and animated spirit. Louise said what she said and never left you wondering what she meant! She always had words of advice and wisdom to impart. Throughout her life she was adopted by many as Mom, Grandma, Weezy, Auntie, etc. Her kind, loving and unselfish heart is what we treasured about her and her tremendous love for us all.

Precious memories will be cherished by her three sons, Joseph Burgess, Sr., Enoch Burgess (April) and Charles Burgess; four daughters, Clara Johnson (Rufus), Dolly Burgess, Geneva Hannah and Mary Burgess-Gregg (Frankie);  45 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great grandchildren; two special nieces, Rosa Brown and Laura Fulmore (Andy); three special friends, Gladys Mae Ennis, Suzanne Coons and Brenda Howard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing/ Visitation will be held 5:00 PM-7:00 PM Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Anthony E. Ward,  Jr. Funeral Home in Princess Anne, Maryland, followed by a service of Remembrance to begin at 7:00 PM.

Interment and further service will be held in Lake City, South Carolina.

  2. Wonderful lady. I am so fortunate to have been slapped by Miss Louise. More then once I must say. I was a slow learner. She raised a wonderful family. God bless you Miss Louise.
