Barbara A. Jones

Barabara Anne Jones, 84, of Polk’s Road, Maryland, departed this life on Monday, July 7, 2025, at her home.  Barbara was born in Allen, Maryland on May 15, 1941, to the late Wesley Grant Handy and late Francis Banks Hitch.  Barbara was raised by her maternal grandparents, Walter and Viola Banks along with several other cousins.

Barbara was educated in the public school system of Wicomico County in Salisbury, Maryland. She graduated from Salisbury High School in 1959.  After high school, she went to Bowie State College for about three years.  Growing up she attended Friendship United Methodist Church in Allen and later after she married Journal, she attended Mt. Zion United Church in Polk’s Road which was merged with two other churches and they called the one church, Trinity Community Worship Center. Shortly after that she changed her membership to New Psalmist Non-Denominational Church. She was the President of the Busy Bee Club of Mt. Zion Church for many years.  Barbara began working for a place called Foggy Bottom in Polk’s Road, and then  began working at Delmarva Power, where she worked 29 ½ years and then retired.

In her pass time she loved to watch wrestling on tv. She would be yelling and screaming as if she was at a live show.  She went to see a few live shows at the Civic Center in Salisbury, Maryland. Her real love was being outside in the spring and summer tending to her plants and flowers.  In her early years, she would sew her clothes. She loved to cook.  It was always something to eat around the house.  She loved to wear hats, she always wore a hat whether outside tending to her flowers or going to function.

Barbara had a close friend and co-worker, Elizabeth Stevenson that would call her once a week to see how she was doing and on occasions Elizabeth would come by to visit with other co-workers.  Barbara also had a bonus son/nephew Von Lenior, who spent most of his time at her house when he was growing up. Von would call her once a month to joke and clown with her and she loved that.  She would also cook for Von, if she found out he was coming home for a visit.  Barbara also had a bonus sister cousin Rosalee Mills.  Barbara and Rosalee were raised by their grandparents so they were more like sisters than cousins. They would talk on the phone every week or go to one another’s house.

Barbara leaves to cherish her memories with: her loving husband of 61 years, Journal of Polk’s Road, two sons, Michael Jones of Polk’s Road and Garry (Barbara) Jones of Salisbury, Maryland, one sister, Thelma Long of Georgetown, Delaware; one brother-in-law, Earl Jones of Polk’s Road; one grandson, Chris Jones of Costa Rica; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Barbara was the oldest of her siblings. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by, one sister, Betty Collick, and four brothers Edward Hitch, Lawrence Hitch Jr, Thomas Hitch and Randolph Hitch.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, July 19, 2025, at New Psalmist Non-Denominational Church, 8925 Old Princess Anne Road, Westover, Maryland with a viewing one-hour prior.  A public viewing will also be held 2:00 PM-6:00 PM Friday, July 18, 2025, at Anthony E. Ward, Jr. Funeral Home in Princess Anne.

To My Mother, My Aunt, My Mentor. I will always Love you for your tough kindness. You would have to know my auntie to understand that statement. One of my favorite things my Aunt would say and find joy in, especially when it came to teasing me was. ” Vonny would you like anything to eat” (I would fall for it every time) I would say “I’ll take some of that” She would smile at me and say ” You will take nothing, you can have some” One of my fondest memories of My 2nd Mom.
