On September 25, 2020, Mable Floise Jones, 99, gently closed her eyes and went to be with the Lord, answering the call by God to come home at Manokin Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare. Mable was born in Mt. Vernon section of Princess Anne Maryland on June 15, 1921 to the late Augustus Jones and Lessie Game Jones.
She received her elementary education at Mt. Vernon Elementary School in Mt. Vernon and her high school education at Greenwood High School in Princess Anne, Maryland. She went on to attend Morgan State College, now Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. While attending Morgan College, she became a member Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Delta Chapter.
Later when she returned home Mable became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Omega Chapter where she proudly served for a total of 71 years making her a Pearl Soror. She especially enjoyed traveling to monthly meetings, Boule, Cluster meeting and Regional meetings throughout the United States with her dear friend, Bettie Collins. Mable proudly wore her Pink & Green! She completed post-graduate studies at Morgan College, Temple University, University of Pennsylvania, Franklin and Marshall and Columbia University.
Mable began teaching Mathematics in 1945 at the Carter G. Woodson School in Crisfield, Maryland where she taught for 24 years. Upon integration, Mable taught at Crisfield High School in Crisfield for 16 years. She easily balanced her “no-nonsense” approach to teaching students with nurturing, supporting, and encouraging them. She was loved and respected by all. She was so immensely proud to learn of the accomplishments of her former students and always looked forward to their calls and visits. She especially anticipated seeing the members of the Carter G. Woodson Class of 1969 through the years who consistently, faithfully visited her during their reunion celebration weekends which were held near her birthday.
Mable accepted Christ and joined St. Paul United Methodist Church (now Trinity United Community Worship Center) at an early age. She held the positions of Treasure, Secretary, Bulletin Board Chairman, Church Clerk, Member of the Homecoming Committee, Member of the Family and Friends Committee and Mother of The Church.
When she was unable to attend church on a regular basis because of her health, she was always willing to help in whatever capacity she could, such as mailing letters for Homecoming and Family and Friends Day. She would always check in after Special Days to find out how the service went.
Her civic and community involvement included: Vice President of Ladies Auxiliary of the Mt. Vernon Fire Company; National Council Teachers of Math; Maryland State Teachers Association; Somerset County of School Personnel; a member of Alpha Kappa Sorority, Inc. Delta Sigma Chapter, where she served as a member of the finance committee, auditor, and Member-At-Large Officer.
She also enjoyed watching Let’s Make a Deal, The Price is Right, and her favorite soaps, The Young and The Restless and The Bold and Beautiful. She especially enjoyed Dancing with The Stars and discussing with friends who would win. She enjoyed travelling, photography and shopping!
Mable touched the lives of all she knew, including the staff of Manokin Rehabilitation and Healthcare. Frequently her nurses and aides would often stop by and watch her favorite games shows with her.
Mable’s beautiful life will forever be cherished by her family: her niece, Roslyn Pendleton (Vincent); godchildren, Rose Collins and Kirk Holden, Jr.; companion, Robert Anderson; and many cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Narvel Jones and her two sisters, Ada Tilghman and Minnie Parsons.
A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Princess Anne with a viewing two hours prior. A visitation will be held 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM Friday, October 2. 2020 at Anthony Ward, Jr. Funeral Home in Princess Anne.
Interment will be at Trinity United Methodist Community Worship Center Cemetery.
Please be advised that masks are mandatory at all services and social distancing will be enforced in accordance with the CDC and State regulations.

I’m so sorry to read about Miss Jones’s passing.
I had her for two years at CHS. As a teen, I didn’t appreciate her teaching abilities. I’m so glad that my job kept me in occasional contact with her after graduation. It was always a pleasure to see her come into the office.

If I’ve learned anything down through the years, it’s that nothing beautiful in this world is ever really lost-Those we cherish will always live on in memory. She was truly a professional and a wonderful person. She will truly be missed.
